Expert predictions for the CFP title game: Will Georgia or TCU prevail?

When Georgia and TCU square off in the College Football Playoff national title game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, history will be made.

The Bulldogs might become only the sixth school to repeat as national champions, making them the first team to do so in ten years. If the Horned Frogs pull off another upset in the playoffs, they will be one of the most unlikely teams to win a national championship in the modern era and the school's first since 1938.

Both teams are coming off dramatic semifinal victories, where Georgia had to come back from a 14-point hole in the fourth quarter and watch Ohio State lose a last-second opportunity to win by one point. To defeat the Big Ten champions in a shootout, 51-45, TCU took an early lead against Michigan and held on with a late stop.

The quarterbacks for the Bulldogs and Horned Frogs, respectively, Stetson Bennett and Max Duggan, were both Heisman Trophy candidates. Which defense can generate enough stops to pull off a victory may determine the winner.

Georgia establishes a claim to becoming the newest flavor in college football by winning back-to-back championships, this time with a lot less difficult than they did against Ohio State. Although TCU possesses talented skill players, they are not on the same level as the Bulldogs' semifinal rivals. The only way for TCU to stay in the game is to maintain balance, particularly by rushing the ball and sticking to their game plan of taking numerous shots from the field. However, Georgia will prove to be too tough in the trenches, and the Horned Frogs will have to play catch-up from the beginning, bringing an otherwise wonderful season to a disappointing finish.

TCU has made me seem more silly this year than any other college football team, yet I'm still willing to pick against the Horned Frogs. Georgia is just in a different weight class, even though their path to the national championship game has been amazing and, quite honestly, something the sport needed. The program Kirby Smart has created, which combines almost unparalleled skill with a single drive (sound familiar?! ), should lead to the Dawgs winning consecutive championships.

One thing is certain: Georgia won't treat TCU lightly. The Horned Frogs will score against the Bulldogs even without a surprise, though, if quarterback Max Duggan bounces back from a shaky two-game stretch and rediscovers the form that made him a Heisman Trophy nominee. The bigger problem might be on the other side of the ball, where Stetson Bennett's solid play and the Bulldogs' abundance of skill position alternatives could expose the TCU defense. Georgia may eventually be able to wear down the Frogs for a second consecutive national championship because of their depth advantage.

For TCU, this season has been nothing short of extraordinary, and their victory over Michigan was the pinnacle of defying expectations. The Horned Frogs, however, also profited from playing a team that was overconfident and prone to errors. Georgia won't be as generous as Michigan. The Bulldogs have too much talent on both lines of scrimmage, even though they exhibited vulnerability in their secondary and will give up yards in this championship game. TCU will remain for a while. In the end, Georgia wins convincingly to become the first team to successfully defend its title in ten years.

I don't think it would be wise to choose against TCU. That was undoubtedly demonstrated by the Horned Frogs in their victory over Michigan. But here's the issue: Unlike the Wolverines, who benefited from bad play choices and crucial errors, the Bulldogs won't support them. Georgia, on the other hand, will not be able to simply force its way to the line of scrimmage as it has in the past. But as he has done on stages large and small, Stetson Bennett will figure something out. TCU will make some impressive plays and score some points, but the Bulldogs will once again step up when necessary.

The Horned Frogs are loose and will start the game well, possibly holding an advantage going into the locker room at halftime. However, Georgia's advantage in size and depth will finally come into play, and Stetson Bennett will cap off his incredible career by aiding the Bulldogs in pulling away in the fourth quarter to win their second straight championship.
